The Utah Museum of Natural History (UMNH) at the U of U announces it will prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed construction and operation of a new museum facility at its new site.  You are invited to participate in a new scoping process for the EIS.

The museum facility is proposed to be build on a 17-acre site south of Red Butte Garden.  National Park Service (NPS) funds are helping to pay for the project so an environmental analysis of the potential environmental effects of the proposal in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).  Due to public involvement UMNH will prepare an EIS instead of the originally planned Environmental Assessment (EA).

Save Our Canyons is concerned about development in this area and the location of the building in such close proximity to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.  Red Butte Canyon and the surrounding land was set aside as a natural area for study and observation.  We feel that there should be careful consideration to the unique natural and historic aspects of this area before it is decided that it needs yet another building.

The deadline for submitting comments was October 8th.  Visit the museums webpage to learn more about the EIS.  Thanks to everyone who submitted comments.
