And now, here's John:
"Hello, and welcome! I'm John Worlock, bringing you the Wasatch Environmental Update, sponsored by Save Our Canyons."That's how I start off each week's three-minute radio piece, which is aired on KRCL (FM 90.9) on Tuesday afternoons at 4:30. We try to find something to say that is hot and topical each week. Sometimes it's just information, but often it's a little preachy and opinionated. It's actually more fun to be preachy.
Over the past two years, we have found quite a variety of issues. We've dealt with the FAA's ideas for reorganizing the flight paths into the Salt Lake Airport, and the Wasatch Powderbirds' wish to renew their permit and expand their heliski operation in the Tri-Canyon area. We have several times mentioned the Utah Department of Transportation's reprimands from the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, sending their plans back to square one for lack of environmental attention. We have discussed the twin threats of radioactive dumps at Envirocare and at Skull Valley, and the implied shipments of radioactive waste through our valley. Several times the Update has plead for volunteers to work with the Forest Service Backcountry Rangers in projects such as rebuilding trails and restoring backcountry campsites.
But sometimes, we just kick back and talk about how beautiful it all is, and how fortunate we are to live where true wilderness is virtually in our backyards.
Give it a listen. Tuesdays at 4:30 on KRCL. You'll hear some stirring banjo music, too.
